13th Conjoint Ophthalmology Scientific Conference (COSC 2024)

A Platform for Learning, Collaboration, and Innovation

Held from the 13th to the 14th of September 2024, the 13th Conjoint Ophthalmology Scientific Conference (COSC 2024) in Kota Bharu, Kelantan, provided a robust platform for eye care professionals to share insights, collaborate, and explore new opportunities in the field of ophthalmology. The exhibit hall buzzed with excitement as attendees experienced cutting-edge technologies firsthand and engaged in discussions about their clinical applications and potential to improve patient outcomes.

The event’s focus on glaucoma and neuro-ophthalmology care aligns with Malaysia’s broader efforts to reduce the incidence of vision impairment due to preventable conditions. With innovations like the Kestrel 300, Frey AP-600, and Visionix Optovue OCT now available, the future of eye care in Malaysia looks brighter than ever.

A Glimpse into the Future of Glaucoma Detection

One of the most anticipated segments of the conference was the exhibition of new technologies aimed at enhancing glaucoma detection—an essential focus in Malaysia, where glaucoma is the third leading cause of blindness, after cataracts and diabetes, according to the National Eye Survey 2014.

1. Kestrel 300 Portable Fundus Camera

This revolutionary device captured attention with its lightweight, portable design (weighing just 3.6kg) and ease of use. The Kestrel 300 allows subjects to self-operate the camera, making it an ideal solution for remote or understaffed clinics. This innovation is set to improve access to glaucoma screening and facilitate early detection through retinal imaging.

2. Suoer Rebound Tonometer

Another highlight was the rebound tonometer, which provides rapid and efficient glaucoma screening. With the ability to screen both eyes in just 6 seconds, it is suitable for all age groups, including infants. This tonometer promises to streamline diagnostic workflows and offer fast, accurate intraocular pressure readings, a key factor in diagnosing glaucoma. Neuro-Ophthalmology Innovations

The conference also highlighted advancements in neuro-ophthalmology, particularly in the context of glaucoma care, where optic nerve health is critical.

1. Frey AP-600 Automated Perimeter

The Frey AP-600 Automated Perimeter is set to revolutionize optic nerve diagnostics. Frey, a well-established Polish manufacturer, has integrated expanded testing options and the innovative TIA™ Standard, Fast, and Superfast tests, which improve the accuracy and speed of visual field assessments. The TIA™ Superfast platform reduces clinic waiting times while enhancing patient comfort and diagnostic precision. Additionally, its 17” HD display and patient-friendly audio guide ensure an accurate and comfortable testing experience.

2. Visionix Optovue OCT

Another key product showcased was the Visionix Optovue OCT, which features the world’s largest FDA-approved normative database for optical coherence tomography (OCT) and OCT angiography (OCTA). This device is crucial for the early detection of glaucoma, as it is the only OCT that measures the focal loss volume (FLV) of the ganglion cell complex, a critical indicator of early-stage glaucoma. This feature makes the Optovue OCT an invaluable tool in detecting and monitoring changes before significant vision loss occurs.

3. DGH Scanmate Flex

Introduced to the local market by Vitop Malaysia, the DGH Scanmate Flex from USA is another groundbreaking device for glaucoma and anterior segment imaging. With its high-resolution ultrasound technology, the Scanmate Flex enables detailed imaging of the eye, from A and B scans to UBM scans. This technology provides clinicians with critical insights into the structure of the eye, particularly the anterior chamber angle. With a long-standing reputation in ophthalmology, DGH has been a leader in pachymetry and ultrasound imaging since 1982.

Conclusion

The 13th COSC and 8th USM Ophthalmology Symposium provided an exciting glimpse into the future of glaucoma detection and neuro-ophthalmology care. The event successfully brought together experts and industry leaders to explore the latest advancements, share knowledge, and foster collaboration—all with the goal of improving patient care and outcomes.

As we look ahead, these innovations are expected to play a pivotal role in reducing the burden of glaucoma and other neuro-ophthalmic diseases in Malaysia and beyond.

Stay tuned for more updates on next year’s conference and further breakthroughs in ophthalmology!
